Verb tenses: adding -ed and -ing

The basic form of a verb is called the infinitive. It normallyoccurswith the wordtoas in ‘I wantto askyou a question.’ Verbs maychangetheir spelling according to which tense is being used.

Thepast tenserefers to things that happened in the past. To make the past tense of regular verbs, the ending-edis added to the infinitive ('Iaskedher a question'). Thepresent participlerefers to things that are still happening. To make the present participle, the ending-ingis added to the infinitive ('I amaskingher a question').

Often there's no need to make any otherspellingchanges when you add-edand-ingto the infinitive but there are some cases when it's necessary to do so. Here are some rules to help you get it right:

Examples of Paraphrasing

Paraphrasinginvolves taking a set of facts or opinions and rewording them. When paraphrasing, it is important to keep the originalmeaningand to present it in a new form. Basically, you are simply writing something in your own words that expresses the original idea.
